A Brief Comparison between LED Flood Lights and HID Flood Lights

LED flood lights serve a wide array of purposes. It is primarily used for lighting tennis court, playgrounds like football and cricket stadiums. LED Floodlights are used for lighting platform during stage concerts. Before the popularity of LED floodlight, people used to rely on HID (High-intensity discharge) lamps to the lit area for sporting events.

But in the current era, more people prefer LED lighting and therefore have switched to LED-powered Flood lights to light up a large stadium due to the numerous benefits associated with LED lighting.

Given below is a brief comparison between LED flood lights and HID floodlights.
  • Save Energy Save Nature:
The biggest advantage of preferring LED flood lights over HID flood lights is that it contributes to energy savings. According to research LED Floodlights saves around 65-80 percent more energy as compared to the traditional HID floodlights.
  • LED lasts longer:
According to many types of research and situations where HID Floodlights have been used for lighting purposes, the lights have seemed to deteriorate at least 65%after burning for 9000 hours. Many light system owners have revealed that HID flood lights require few replacements during a season, but LED solutions lasted throughout the season.
  • Warm up Period:
Another limitation when it comes to HID Floodlights is that it requires a warm-up time of 15-30 seconds after you turn it on. Hence it is not suitable for stage performances and shows where timing is a crucial element. While on the other end LED lights can be turned on instantaneously and are an ideal option when time is an essence.
  • Emissions:
The HID Floodlights produce a lot of unwanted emissions like IR (Infra Red) and UV (Ultra Violet) ray, unlike the LED Floodlights that do not produce any harmful emissions.

Few things to know about LED Floodlights:

  • LED chips: The SMD LED Floodlights lasts longer than COB LED Floodlights. The reason being SMD LED uses many little LED Chips instead of a large LED chip.
  • Beam Angle: Almost all LED Flood lights come with a beam angle of 180degrees. The common misconception that lies with most customers is that the Floodlights purchased sometimes turns brighter than required. The problem here does not lie with the beam angle or the floodlight but actually where the Floodlight is placed. The higher the level of flood light installation, the brighter the beam. Hence it is ideal for installing the LED Floodlight accordingly.
  • IP Rating: It is advisable to buy LED Flood lights with minimum IP of 54. LED floodlights with a higher IP of 65 avoid water and dust from percolating into the fitting.

Conclusion:

LED flood lights have a wide variety of uses from lighting massive stadiums, auditoriums and stages or platforms. LED flood lights are available in different colours, wattage and IP ratings giving a variety to choose from for the buyers. LED Floodlights are more environmentally friendly, last longer and are more efficient light output and also do not emit useless radiation.
